Plan a better-value holiday
Cheap Weekend Breaks: Compare Cost and Usable Time
For a two-night break, travel times can matter as much as the headline price. Compare how much of the weekend you can actually use, then add the costs that make each option workable.

Define your usable weekend
Note when you can leave home and when you must be back. Include travel to the airport or station, check-in requirements and the onward trip to your accommodation. A late flight can be inexpensive while leaving little time on the first evening.
Check the accommodation’s arrival arrangements and the last available public transport. If your flight lands after the last bus, include the transfer you would realistically use.
Compare location against transport spending
For a short visit, accommodation close to your planned activities may save repeated journeys. A room outside the centre may still be good value if the connection is convenient and operates when you need it.
Price the journeys for the whole party. Compare the group total for private transport with the combined tickets and any final connection for public transport.
A two-night comparison
Invented example for two travellers: option A has return travel of €100, a two-night room total of €180, airport transport of €70 and local transport of €30. The planned transport-and-stay total is €380, before meals and activities.
Option B has return travel of €160, accommodation of €190, airport transport of €20 and local transport of €10. The same subtotal is also €380. If B provides a more useful arrival time, it may suit the weekend better despite the higher initial fare.
Keep extras proportionate to the trip
- Compare the baggage allowance with what you need for two nights.
- Check whether breakfast included in the room would replace a real meal expense.
- Add ticketed activities you definitely want, while leaving optional spending separate.
- Compare change and cancellation deadlines with the likelihood that your plans may change.
A saving should not depend on an impractical connection, unsuitable room or an allowance that does not cover what you will bring.
Before confirming the break
Review departure and arrival dates carefully when travelling around midnight. Check the exact airport or station, accommodation address, check-in arrangements and the route back. Save the reservation details where you can reach them during the trip.
Use the holiday budget checklist and the guides to flight costs and hotel prices to build your comparison.
