How to Compare Hotel Prices: Total Cost Checklist

The cheapest room on a search page is not always the cheapest place to stay. Compare the cost of the whole stay, the location and the conditions you are comfortable accepting.

Start with the same room and dates

Use the same check-in and check-out dates, number of guests and room requirements for every comparison. A double room for two adults is not directly comparable with a single-occupancy rate. Check whether the room has a private bathroom, air conditioning or other facilities you actually need.

Read the rate details rather than relying on a hotel name and thumbnail. One property can offer several prices for the same room, with different meals, payment dates or cancellation conditions.

Build a total-stay price

Add the room cost for every night, compulsory charges shown by the provider and any extras you expect to buy. Check whether local taxes are included, payable at the property or calculated separately.

  • Room price for all nights and all travellers
  • Taxes and mandatory property charges
  • Breakfast, parking or other chosen extras
  • Transport between the accommodation and your main activities
Illustrative comparison, not a live offer: Three nights at €90, plus €42 breakfast and €30 transport, total €342. Three nights at €105, with breakfast included and €9 transport, total €324. Confirm actual taxes and inclusions before using this method.

Price the location, not just the room

Look at the exact address and realistic journey options. A cheaper room outside the centre may suit a car trip but add time and transport costs to a short city break. Check late-arrival arrangements if your flight lands after reception hours.

Read recent reviews for the details that matter to your trip: noise, cleanliness, access, room size or the route from public transport. A high average score cannot tell you whether a particular room fits your needs.

Choose cancellation and payment terms deliberately

Compare refundable and non-refundable options separately. Check the cancellation deadline, time zone, prepayment schedule and what happens if you arrive late. A pay-at-property label does not replace the full rate conditions.

Before paying, confirm the currency, final total, guest names and room type. Save the confirmation and contact the accommodation or booking provider named there if you need changes.

Put the checklist into practice

Use the partner search to explore current options, then check the final price and terms on the provider’s website.

Common questions

Does the lowest nightly rate mean the cheapest stay?

No. Compare all nights, compulsory charges, planned extras and transport costs. The lowest nightly rate can produce a higher overall trip cost.

Should I choose a refundable hotel rate?

Compare the extra price with your need for flexibility. Read the exact deadline and refund conditions for the rate you select.
