Cheap Flights: Compare the Total Fare Before Booking

A low flight fare is a useful starting point. To choose a flight that fits your budget, compare the final price for the same travellers, baggage and complete journey.

Make the journey comparable

Use the same travel dates, passenger ages and itinerary when comparing fares. Check whether the displayed price is one-way or return and whether every traveller is included. Compare arrival and departure times as well as the fare.

If you are flexible, try nearby dates and airports. Include the extra journey from each airport to your accommodation. An early departure can also change the cost of getting to the airport.

Add the extras you will actually use

  • Cabin baggage and checked bags for every flight
  • Seats you need or choose to reserve
  • Airport transport at both ends
  • Provider fees shown before payment
  • Any overnight stay required by the flight schedule

Baggage sizes, weight limits and fare inclusions vary. Check the specific fare and the operating airline rather than assuming that a familiar bag will be included.

Illustrative comparison, not a live offer: A €60 fare with €35 baggage, €8 selected seating and €24 airport transport totals €127. A €95 fare that includes the required bag, with €15 airport transport and no optional seat purchase, totals €110.

Check connections and separate bookings

Look at the airport codes, terminals and time between flights. Check whether you must collect and recheck baggage, change airports or meet additional entry requirements. Review those requirements with the relevant authorities before travel.

If you buy separate tickets, do not assume that the next airline will rearrange a missed flight. Read the booking arrangements and consider whether the connection leaves enough room for disruption.

Review the fare before payment

Confirm traveller names against their travel documents, the exact dates and local departure times. Read the change and cancellation conditions of the selected fare and identify who provides support: the airline, an agent or another booking provider.

Keep the confirmation and booking reference. Prices in search results can change before checkout, so base your decision on the final booking screen. For accommodation costs after you land, use our hotel-price checklist.

Put the checklist into practice

Use the partner search to explore current options, then check the final price and terms on the provider’s website.

Common questions

Can a different airport make a cheap flight more expensive?

Yes. Compare the fare together with the cost and timing of airport transport and any extra accommodation required by the schedule.

Are baggage allowances the same on every flight?

No. Check the operating airline and the exact fare for each flight, including size, weight and number of bags.
